Rumors Fly About iPhone (Apple Phone)
We have talked about the powerful brands of APPLE and Disney in class. It is interesting how people speculate about what firms should do, and how they should do it, often based on BRAND IDENTITY.
Rumors are flying around about APPLE, DISNEY, CINGULAR, and also involved, based on history is Motorola. A Motorola Press Release regarding APPLE, including a link to a Steve Jobs video.
The FORBES article, "What would an iPhone Look Like?" discusses some ideas related to the strong BRAND IDENTIES of the firms.
What do you think should happen based on the brand identities?
Who should take the lead?
What should the key features of the product/service offering look like?

I think Apple will go the route of the last example in the article, they will collaborate with a carrier (like Cingular). Like the Ipod it will be an apple product (not made by Motorola). If Apple sticks to is brand it has created the phone will be more like an Ipod that has a phone versus a phone that plays music. I think that most people don't download that most people don't download music to their phone because the sound quality is horrible. Apple should take the lead and make the phone look like an Ipod. I would think that Cingular is the best carrier to go with for shear number of users but different carrier might be more willing to give Apple control of hardware and features. Personally I think it would be a good move for apple because now even more people would buy an Iphone than just an Ipod. I also think many current Ipod owners would buy the Iphone to only have to carry one piece of equipment that does both things.

I think that this is something that Apple has to do to expand into the wireless area, but I am not sure how beneficial it will be. I think they will run into a problem with people actually wanting to buy another iPod just because it has phone. The problem that I see is that wireless companies usually sell phones for dirt cheap because they make most of their money off of the service that they sell. I am sure that Apple would not want to sell their new phone for very cheap, so why would consumers want to purchase another expensive piece of equipment when they probably already own an mp3 player (probably an iPod) and they can get a different cell phone for cheap with a two year service agreement.
I think Apple might have something that is going to differentiate them from the others. I also agree with the others that the speakers in the phones are terrible.

Regarding what Mike said, there is a good point. But I also think, for eample, there are MP3 players, and then there are iPods. There are computers, and then there are Macintoshs. There are cellphones, and then maybe iPhones.
People do not necessarily buy a XYZ, they buy an iXYZ, which is different. So to make a statement, they may be willing to buy an iPhone, because maybe you can even call your sister and look cool at the same time. Yes, a Razr or any other new cool toy does that, too. But only for so long until the Jones' kids have a Razr. An iPhone sends the message for much longer, I think, and people are willing to pay for that. How much, that is a different question.
I think apple should take the lead. Apple has the brand experience and the core competencies as an organization to build a consumer ready device and merge the technologies. Apple has also established a clear and present identity in the market place with consumers and has become known and trusted for delivering quality user friendly devices.
